Inspired by: Pu'uhonua translates to sanctuary. I first came to the Big Island of Hawaii to study Ancient Hawaiian Wisdom and Spirituality. During a week of amazing insights, we visited Pu'uhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park. In ancient times, if you broke the sacred laws (the Kapu) the penalty was death. If you were able to reach the boundaries of Pu'uhonua o Honaunau no harm would come to you. It was a place of safety for the kapu breaker, civilians during times of war and defeated warriors. For me, it too represented a place of refuge, where forgiveness and redemption reigned supreme. This painting reminds me in my daily life that there resides within me a sanctuary where I can forgive and be forgiven and come together with the others to make the world a better place.
